Your spiritual Journey

 

Kol Chai seeks to offer Jews a meaningful spiritual life, through Shabbat and festivals, prayer and study. In our services, our comfortable chairs and cosy space surround a central bimah (reading desk) on the same level as the congregation, so everyone feels involved and a warm atmosphere is created.

 

As Rabbi, my role is to be a guide towards spiritual truth and understanding. Kol Chai recognises that everyone's journey is different, and solutions and courses must be tailored to individual needs.

Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah
Kol Chai specialises in warm and friendly ceremonies for Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah. With the boy or girl
standing only a few feet away from family and friends, we are able to create a very special closeness and
involvement, without the nerves which can come from standing on a platform in a large hall.

• Classes on Sunday mornings
• Full tuition provided
• Minimum two years' Jewish education required
• Ceremonies at age 13 for both boys and girls
• The bar/ bat mitzvah year experienced as a group
• Parental involvement enhances the process
• Charity project is part of the year

I have completed a research MA at University College London on the history of the bar mitzvah ceremony.
Copies of my booklet "Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah – A Reform perspective based on history" can be obtained
free from Kol Chai.

 

Weddings
Kol Chai is a favoured venue for smaller weddings with up to 60 guests. Your reception can be held on site,
and your chuppah will be enhanced by the warm spiritual atmosphere of our house of worship.

Death and Bereavement
It is at the saddest moments of our life that we discover the true meaning of community. Kol Chai has a proud
tradition of supporting its members through times of grief.

• Kol Chai is a member of the Jewish Joint Burial Society
• Full shiva services can be provided
• We offer a full shiva service after the death of member's parents, even when they are not part of our
• community
• Ongoing bereavement support through our network of trained volunteers

Non-Jewish Partners
Non-Jewish partners are welcome at all events and are particularly encouraged to be involved in celebrations
for their children, such as baby blessing and bar and bat mitzvah. Kol Chai is currently considering how we might further encourage participation in the various activities. The precise kind of involvement will vary
from family to family, depending on what is appropriate for you.
